Remote & Artistic

Hiva Oa

Steeped in artistic legacy, Hiva Oa is the final resting place of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel, whose homes-turned-museums celebrate their creative contributions. The island’s dramatic terrain features stone tikis at Puamau, lush rainforests, and the towering Temetiu Peak.

Why We Love Hiva Oa

Visitors can hike to sacred me’ae (temples), sail along the rugged coast, or join locals in traditional dance performances. Hiva Oa’s fusion of history, art, and untamed nature makes it a pilgrimage for culture enthusiasts and explorers drawn to the Marquesas’ mystique.

Artistic Heritage

Part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, Hiva Oa, is a treasure trove of artistic heritage deeply rooted in its Polynesian culture and history. The island is famously associated with the French post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, who spent his final years here and is buried in the village of Atuona.

Hiva Oa is rich in Marquesan traditions such as intricate wood carvings, sacred tiki sculptures, and the ancient art of tattooing, all of which hold profound cultural significance. The island’s vibrant creative spirit continues today with contemporary artists who honor these ancestral customs.

Archaeological Sites

Hiva Oa boasts some of French Polynesia’s most significant archaeological treasures. The Me’ae à Puama’u (Lipona) site features the Marquesas’ tallest tiki statue and ceremonial platforms in a mystical valley setting.

In Ta’aoa Valley, the sprawling tohua (festival grounds) and hundreds of paepae (stone platforms) reveal the island’s ancient tribal hierarchies and spiritual practices. Petroglyphs in the Eiaone Valley and reconstructed marae temples further showcase the island’s pre-European civilization.

Scenic Landscapes

The island’s dramatic terrain combines volcanic peaks, lush valleys, and rugged coastlines. Mount Temetiu (1,276m) dominates the skyline, while the Hakaui Waterfall cascades down emerald cliffs.

The island’s wild northeast coast offers jaw-dropping vistas of bays like Anaho and Tahauku, framed by black sand beaches and coconut groves. Remote dirt roads wind through plateaus and coastal cliffs, where wild horses roam and turquoise waves crash against basaltic ridges—a raw, untamed beauty that captivated Gauguin and Brel.
