Costa Rica’s climate divides into two distinct seasons — the dry season (December through April) and the green season (May through November). Each has its own appeal, and the best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to experience.
Best Seasons for Most Travelers
The dry season runs from December through April and offers the most reliable sunshine, making it ideal for Pacific coast beaches, national park exploration, and outdoor activities across the country. This is also peak season, so early planning is essential — particularly for popular lodges and eco-properties.
The green season brings lush, vibrant landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower rates across the board. Rainfall is typically concentrated in afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, leaving mornings clear and beautiful. This is also when the Caribbean coast flips to its own dry season — making it an excellent time to visit Puerto Viejo and Bocas del Toro.
For wildlife lovers, timing matters: humpback whale season runs from July through October and again in December through March. Sea turtle nesting peaks between July and October on the Caribbean coast. And quetzal sightings are most reliable during nesting season from February through April in Monteverde.
