Costa Rica

Costa Rica is nature at its most theatrical — a small country that somehow contains cloud forests, active volcanoes, Caribbean coastline, Pacific surf, and some of the most biodiverse rainforest on the planet. From the misty heights of Monteverde to the sun-soaked shores of Tamarindo, every region offers a completely different experience, connected by the country’s famously warm spirit and extraordinary wildlife.

Costa Rica’s diversity is its greatest asset — and its greatest planning challenge. With so many ecosystems, regions, and experiences to consider, the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one comes down to knowing where to focus your time.

At Catalina Quest, we build Costa Rica itineraries around what matters most to you — whether that’s chasing wildlife through the national parks, surfing world-class breaks on the Pacific coast, or finding the perfect balance of adventure and restoration in the cloud forest.  With us, you get insider knowledge, smooth logistics, and personalized attention that turn a beautiful destination into an unforgettable journey.

Why We Love Costa Rica

Few destinations pack this much life into such a small footprint. Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation means over 25% of the country is protected national parkland — and it shows. Wildlife is abundant, ecosystems are intact, and the sense that you’re experiencing something genuinely wild never leaves you. Add warm, welcoming communities, exceptional cuisine, and a culture built on pura vida, and you have a destination that delivers on every level.

Extraordinary Biodiversity

Costa Rica is home to nearly 5% of the world’s species despite covering just 0.03% of its surface area. Scarlet macaws, resplendent quetzals, sea turtles, jaguars, and humpback whales share this small country with over 500,000 species of plants and animals. Encounters with wildlife here are not occasional highlights — they are a constant, daily rhythm.

Adventure Opportunities

From white-water rafting and zip lining through cloud forest canopies to surfing world-class Pacific breaks and snorkeling UNESCO-protected reef systems, Costa Rica is one of the world’s great adventure destinations. What sets it apart is the quality of the infrastructure — experienced guides, exceptional operators, and lodges that deliver genuine luxury at the end of an active day.

Pura Vida – A Way of Life

Pura vida — pure life — isn’t just a phrase Costa Ricans use. It’s a genuine cultural philosophy that travelers feel from the moment they arrive. The warmth of local communities, the pace of rural life, the farm-to-table dining culture, and the country’s deep commitment to sustainability all reflect a way of living that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who experiences it.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s climate divides into two distinct seasons — the dry season (December through April) and the green season (May through November). Each has its own appeal, and the best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to experience.

Best Seasons for Most Travelers

The dry season runs from December through April and offers the most reliable sunshine, making it ideal for Pacific coast beaches, national park exploration, and outdoor activities across the country. This is also peak season, so early planning is essential — particularly for popular lodges and eco-properties.

The green season brings lush, vibrant landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower rates across the board. Rainfall is typically concentrated in afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, leaving mornings clear and beautiful. This is also when the Caribbean coast flips to its own dry season — making it an excellent time to visit Puerto Viejo and Bocas del Toro.

For wildlife lovers, timing matters: humpback whale season runs from July through October and again in December through March. Sea turtle nesting peaks between July and October on the Caribbean coast. And quetzal sightings are most reliable during nesting season from February through April in Monteverde.Hanging bridges near Monteverde. Tour in the canopy of the trees.
