Dramatic & Coastal

Vik

Vík í Mýrdal is a picturesque coastal village at Iceland’s southern tip, famous for its dramatic black sand beaches and proximity to waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic landscapes. The village is a hub for birdwatching—especially puffins—and offers easy access to Reynisfjara Beach, Dyrhólaey Peninsula, and the iconic plane wreck at Sólheimasandur.

Why We Love Vik

Puffin Watching

Vík is a prime destination for puffin enthusiasts and birdwatchers, thanks to its dramatic coastline and thriving seabird colonies. From May to mid-August, the cliffs of Reynisfjara beach and the heights of Mt. Reynisfjall become home to puffins, offering unforgettable viewing opportunities against the backdrop of basalt columns and black sand beaches.

Whether you take a guided tour or explore on your own, this region allows you to spot puffins up close, along with other seabirds, making it a must for nature lovers.

Waterfalls

The area around Vík is surrounded by some of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls, each offering its own unique experience. Highlights include the iconic Skógafoss—known for its sheer power and the climb to panoramic views—alongside hidden gems like Kvernufoss, nestled in moss-covered canyons and accessible by a short, scenic hike.

Seljalandsfoss is famous for the path that leads behind its curtain of water, providing a rare perspective and photo opportunity. Lesser-visited waterfalls like Stjórnarfoss and Gluggafoss add further variety, making Vík a waterfall lover’s paradise.

Ice Cave tours

Ice cave adventures from Vík offer an unforgettable chance to explore natural wonders beneath Iceland’s glaciers. Guided tours whisk travelers in Super Jeeps to the renowned Katla Ice Cave—a mesmerizing world of blue ice streaked with volcanic ash beneath the mighty Katla volcano.

The caves are accessible year-round, with experienced guides sharing fascinating geological stories as you hike across black sand deserts and step into ever-changing ice formations. The Vík region is considered one of the best and most unique places in Iceland for this bucket-list activity.
